With some 7 km of sandy coast, and a further 3 km of rock coast, Argeles is probably the main resort in the area. It is very popular with campers, having a multitude of campsites, and is more of a traditional beach resort with plenty of eateries and bars and a couple of big markets.
It is also caters well for kids with a lots of bouncy castles and a small fairground.
Historical Collioure was a very important harbour during the Greek and Phoenician times, and is the jewel of the "Vermeille Coast".
To be honest, the beaches are a bit pebbly, but this small coastal town is probably the pick of the bunch along the Med. as far as good food, art and history are concerned. It is worth taking a stroll through the old streets and browsing the art shops, many with the artists themselves selling their paintings.
Another wide expanse of beach - some 8 km - just north of Perpignan. Noted for the flamingos that can be seen on the dunes.
Perpignan’s beach. A mixture between the very commercial and the very pretty. It has a very long beach (about 9 km) with lovely clean waters. There is also a salt lake which seems to change colour with the sun's movement across the sky, varying from pink to grey or silver blue.
A lovely beach with 3 km of fine sand stretching from a Natural Reserve to the port.
Another lovely stretch of beach, some 6 km, also a port with the Canigou mountain and the Albères hills in the background.
As the same would suggest, a port rather than a beach, and with a number of creeks that are teeming with sea life and great for diving.
The last port before you hit Spain, its beach and bay is usually decorated with Catalan fishing boats.
Definitely the last stop before Spain, a footpath from the fishing marina leads to a number of small rocky beaches huddled in between the coves.
Drive over to Roses and discover the secluded coves along the coast.
Or you have easy access to the length of the Costa Brava. It's not all Union Jack shorts and fish and chips!
